The story of Andaz Amsterdam

Prinsengracht 587

Hyatt's philosophy for its Andaz properties is that they are luxurious and lively boutique hotels where local history and culture must be felt and experienced. In the Andaz Amsterdam, that philosophy is expressed in a grand and immersive fashion thanks to the collaboration with Marcel Wanders.

History

In 1720, Peter Hugeton constructed a building, probably a warehouse, on the site now known as Prinsengracht 587. That building was demolished towards the end of the 19th century to make way for Marinus van der Waal who built Amsterdam's first steam-powered clothes factory on the site. From then on, the building was connected to Keizersgracht 440, which functioned as a textile warehouse. In 1919, new neighbours arrived: the Public Reading Room of the Amsterdam Library opened at number 444.

In 1973, the whole lot is demolished again, with the exception of the monumental facade on the Keizersgracht.  The new building is used as offices for the first few years until the Public Library is moved there in 1977.  On 6 June 2007, at 18:06, the last book is lent out to the oldest member of the library and development begins on a sensational hotel.

Stunning design

Aedes undertook the redevelopment of this large building (comprising 12,500 square meters it is one of the largest buildings on the Amsterdam canal belt) in cooperation with interior designer Marcel Wanders. With Hyatt's desire to enrich the hotel with the necessary couleur locale, we made Andaz Amsterdam into the flagship of this hotel brand.

The interior, both of the public areas and the rooms, is an eclectic mix of old and new Amsterdam, of traditional and modern and Dutch cultural heritage. 17th-century splendour, tulips, Delft Blue, orange, nautical history, fishing, classical art and modern video art and books that refer to the function of the building as a knowledge centre; all this echoes in the furniture, carpets and wall coverings, the decoration, lighting, in literally every object found in the hotel.

Fun fact: On each storey the floor numbers are illustrated as part of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, and you have to descend from the top to the bottom floor to discover how the story ends.

The garden, which still connects the premises on the Prinsengracht with that on the Keizersgracht, is also an attraction in itself. This quiet, romantic and mysterious garden gives your thoughts space. And at the same time, you can also be overwhelmed by the graffiti mural entitled "Alice in Amsterdam".

Hotel and creative hub

Keizersgracht 440, whose hallway has been completely restored to its former glory, is partly used as a workspace for companies in the creative sector and partly used as a hotel with 26 hotel rooms, meeting rooms and a restaurant.

Prinsengracht 587 is entirely in use as a hotel, with on the ground floor the lobby, a bar, a restaurant and equipment rooms. The hotel comprises a total of 122 rooms and five suites, the largest of which is presidential size: at 140 square meters. There is also a library, a spa, a 24/7 gym and a number of meeting rooms.  The hotel also has a permanent exhibition of 40 video artworks.
